I know, lets kayak to the Scillies! Another Tom special of course. Why? Why not?
Let’s launch a 22 foot sea kayak from a surfing beach, on a day when 3m swells are predicted, then kayak 32 miles across the horizon into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
All I needed to do was to find someone else daft enough to do it with me. That would be Pete Bird, with whom I rowed the Atlantic.
We were drenched within seconds of setting of. Every minute for the full seven hours of the trip we had an early bath of cold Atlantic water right over our heads. I was seasick, but concentrating on keeping the boat upright in the heavy conditions, so unable to even break my stroke to allow for the inconvenience.
We’ve done it now. Why? We still don’t know.
